Session Replay Glossary
Short, precise definitions of the words that come up when you record, replay, mask and translate user sessions — each with a note on how AnyReplay handles it.
Chunked upload
Chunked upload is the practice of splitting a session recording into small, sequentially numbered batches of events and sending each one as soon as it is full or a timer fires, instead of uploading the whole session at the end.
Circuit breaker
A circuit breaker is a client-side safeguard that counts consecutive failures against a remote service and, once a threshold is reached, stops sending requests instead of retrying indefinitely.
Consent
Consent, in the context of session replay, is the user's explicit and informed agreement to have their session recorded, given before any recording starts and revocable at any time.
Content Security Policy (CSP)
A Content Security Policy (CSP) is an HTTP response header, or meta tag, through which a site declares which origins the browser may load scripts, styles, images and network connections from on that page.
Data retention
Data retention is the policy that defines how long recorded sessions and their associated data are stored before they are automatically and permanently deleted.
Dead click
A dead click is a single click or tap after which nothing observable happens on the page: no navigation, no DOM change, no network request and no visual feedback within a short window.
DOM recording
DOM recording is a session replay technique that serialises the browser's document object model once, then records each subsequent mutation, input and scroll as a small event instead of capturing video.
Funnel
A funnel is an analytics report that counts how many users reach each successive step of a defined flow, such as sign-up or checkout, and shows the proportion lost between steps.
Glossary term
A glossary term is an organisation-defined pair of a source word or phrase and its required translation, which overrides the translation model's own choice whenever that term appears in a session.
Heatmap
A heatmap is a visualisation that aggregates an interaction metric, such as clicks, mouse movement or scroll depth, from many sessions onto a single page image, using colour to show where activity concentrates.
Incremental snapshot
An incremental snapshot is a session replay event that describes a change to the page since the previous event, such as a DOM mutation, a mouse move, a scroll or an input, rather than the whole document.
Input masking
Input masking is the replacement of the values a user enters into form fields with placeholder characters at record time, so the recording contains the shape of the input but never its content.
Origin allow-list
An origin allow-list is a server-side rule that accepts session data only from requests whose browser-set Origin header matches one of the domains registered for a project.
PII
PII (personally identifiable information) is any data that identifies a specific person on its own or in combination with other data, such as a name, email address, phone number, account identifier or payment detail.
Rage click
A rage click is a rapid series of clicks or taps on the same element or spot, made by a user whose action produced no visible response, and it is one of the most reliable signals of frustration in a session recording.
React Native element tree
The React Native element tree is the hierarchy of host elements, such as View, Text and TextInput, that React has committed to the screen after rendering, together with their props and layout.
rrweb
rrweb is an open-source JavaScript library that serialises a web page's DOM into a snapshot, records later mutations as events, and replays those events in a player.
Sampling rate
A sampling rate is the fraction of visitors, expressed as a number between 0 and 1, whose sessions a replay SDK records, used to control volume and cost on high-traffic applications.
Sandbox iframe
A sandbox iframe is an HTML iframe carrying the `sandbox` attribute, which removes capabilities such as script execution, form submission and top-level navigation from the document rendered inside it.
Semantic recording
Semantic recording is a way of capturing a user session by recording the meaning of the interface, such as each element's type, text and position, rather than a picture of it.
sendBeacon
sendBeacon is a browser API (`navigator.sendBeacon`) that queues a small, fire-and-forget HTTP request which the browser completes even after the page that sent it has been closed or navigated away from.
Session replay
Session replay is a recording of one user's interactions with an application, stored as data rather than video, that a reviewer can play back later to see what that person saw and did.
Translation memory
Translation memory is a persistent store of source strings and their approved translations, consulted before any new translation is requested, so text that has been translated once is reused rather than translated again.
User identification
User identification is the act of associating a recorded session with an identity your application already knows, typically a user ID and optionally an email address, so sessions can be searched by person rather than by anonymous visitor.
Visitor ID
A visitor ID is a random, anonymous identifier that a recording SDK generates on first contact and stores on the device, so later sessions from the same browser or app can be grouped together without any personal data.
