Heatmaps: Where People Click on Each Page
Click heatmaps per page from your AnyReplay web recordings: desktop, tablet and phone widths, rage and dead clicks, path patterns, and the sessions behind each.
A heatmap shows where people clicked on one page, across every web recording of it, drawn over the page itself. It needs nothing beyond the recorder you already installed: each recording is read once, a few minutes after the visit ends, and its page views and clicks are added to the project's heatmaps. Open Heatmaps in the project menu.
The page list
Every page seen in the chosen period, with its views, clicks, rage clicks, dead clicks and error clicks, and how many views came from each device class. Sort by any column, search by path, and narrow it to sessions from a country, browser or operating system, or to identified or anonymous visitors — the same meanings as in the session list.
A page is its path: the query string, the fragment and a trailing slash are left off, so /pricing?ref=mail and /pricing/ are both /pricing. To count pages that differ only by an id as one, enter patterns under Group pages, separated by commas. * stands for any part of the path, slashes included:
| Pattern | Matches | Does not match |
|---|---|---|
/products/* | /products/42, /products/42/reviews | /products |
/blog/*/edit | /blog/hello/edit | /blog/hello |
One page's heatmap
- Device. Desktop (1024 px wide and up), tablet (768–1023 px) and mobile (narrower). A click counts for the width the window had at that moment, so a resized window moves to another class from then on.
- Heat colours the page by how many clicks landed there, from blue for a few to red for the most. Elements outlines the clicked elements with their click counts instead.
- Rage and dead clicks rings the clicks that were part of a rage burst (red) or got no response (dashed amber).
- The Elements tab lists the most clicked elements with their share of the page's clicks. Pick one, or a hotspot on the page, to see the sessions behind it; each opens the player a moment before that click.
The page underneath is a recent visit rebuilt by the player, paused just after the page loaded. Masked text stays masked and blocked elements stay blank, exactly as in a replay. Scroll the heatmap to see the rest of the page; elements pinned to the screen, such as a sticky header, keep their clicks where they are on screen.
From the player
In a web recording, the flame button beside the star opens the heatmap of the page on screen, at the device class of that moment.
What is counted, and for how long
- Web recordings only. Screens of mobile apps are not in heatmaps yet.
- Up to 2,000 clicks per recording. A visit with more is still replayed in full.
- Heatmap data belongs to its recording: when retention, an erasure request or a deletion removes the recording, its clicks go with it. History therefore goes back as far as your plan keeps recordings; see data retention.
- Heatmaps are available on every plan, to every member who can watch sessions.
- Recordings made before heatmaps were added are read again in the background, newest first, so older periods fill in over the following days.
